With the Frigo Group first in line, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me financially. But that support was much more than sponsoring alone. During those tough moments on the road to the top of Alpe d\u2019Huez, I felt a lot of psychological support from all those people who had gathered together behind me.\u2019 Alpe d\u2019HuZes collected a total of more than 20 million euros in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More than 27 years after being cured of leukaemia, Jos\u00e9\u00a0 from Bennebroek, also conquered the Alpe d\u2019Huez. With the financial and moral support of sponsors that included the Frigo Group \u2013 and her friend, Willemijn Ellemeet\u00a0 who also lives in Bennebroek \u2013 she reached the top of this mountain in the French Alps on 7 and 8 June after 8.5 hours of tremendous effort. \u2018Stuck onto the luggage carrier of my bicycle were pictures of friends and acquaintances who had died of cancer or were suffering from the disease,\u2019 says Jos\u00e9. \u2018I had to think about them all the way to the top \u2013 I was cycling for them, too. When Willemijn and I finally reached the finish line after hours of pushing ourselves onward and upward, we both broke out into tears. It was a very emotional moment.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giving up is not an option!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Giving up is not an option\u2019 is the motto of the Alpe d\u2019HuZes Foundation that collects money that is spent, by means of its own research fund, on research conducted to fight and prevent cancer. \u2018And all the money collected is actually spent on research \u2013 nothing goes to the foundation itself \u2013 there\u2019s absolutely no rake-off,\u2019 emphasised Jos\u00e9. \u2018That appealed to me so much that I decided at the beginning of this year to participate in the Alpe d\u2019HuZes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-492 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.frigogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/vrieshuis_frigo_group_sponsor_alpe_dhuzus_ii_028.1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.frigogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/vrieshuis_frigo_group_sponsor_alpe_dhuzus_ii_028.1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><strong>A long hesitation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She hesitated for a long time, because due to lung problems, for one thing, Jos\u00e9 had doubts about whether she could really do it. Willemijn convinced her and spontaneously offered to accompany her friend on the asphalt road with its 21 curves winding their way to the top of the Alpe d\u2019Huez. \u2018Wil and Henk, owners of the Frigo in \u2018s-Heerenberg, are friends of ours. When we asked them if they would sponsor us, they didn\u2019t hesitate a second. Many family members and friends were also willing to sponsor our participation in the Alpe d\u2019HuZes. When we took off for France, we knew that if we could reach the top, we could transfer \u20ac 2,800 to the Alpe d\u2019HuZes Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dutch \u2018mountains\u2019 nothing like the Alps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To prepare, Jos\u00e9 and Willemijn had put in their hours of training on roads like those in South Limburg and, closer to home, the slopes of the pyramid-shaped Big Spotters Hill on the former Floriade site in Hoofddorp. In France, these \u2018Dutch mountains\u2019 proved nothing in comparison with the steepness of a French Alp. \u2018During our first training ride on Monday, 6 June, it quickly became clear that Jos\u00e9 wouldn\u2019t make it in a single go,\u2019 says Willemijn. \u2018That\u2019s when we decided to start on Tuesday. On that day, under terrible weather conditions with lots of rain and fog, we arrived at curve 7. During those tough moments on the road to the top of Alpe d\u2019Huez, I felt a lot of psychological support from all those people who had gathered together behind me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A one-time event?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But the question now is: was this a one-time event, or is volunteering for another Alpe d\u2019HuZes next year an option for both of these ladies? \u2018It was worth repeating in any case,\u2019 says Willemijn, smiling. \u2018But whether or not we\u2019ll do it again\u2026 Well, we\u2019ll be thinking about that in the near future.\u2019 \u2018First, though,\u2019 says Jos\u00e9, \u2018we\u2019re going to enjoy what we\u2019ve done here for a while.
